Thank you for your interest in The Fields of Ukraine. The book is available now on Amazon in paperback.

About the Book

This Holocaust memoir tells the story of Yosef Laufer, a teenager who escapes deportation to a Nazi death camp with his father. For two years, they survive in the fields and woods outside their village of Zurawno. Their daily lives are shaped by the threat of discovery by occupying troops and local residents, and by the courage, sacrifice, and bond that keep father and son together.

Told in Yosef's own words, the account remembers his family and the Jewish community of Zurawno. Haim Tal, who has spent decades preserving Holocaust survivors' stories, tells Yosef's story with him. The memoir describes both an individual struggle to survive and the lives and fates of fellow members of the community.

Readers, Educators, and Family Historians

The book is for readers interested in Holocaust memoirs, World War II, and family and community history. Genealogists and educators can find descriptions of life in Galicia, now Ukraine, and information about families in Zurawno before and during the war. The site's Jews of Zhuravno section also points to JewishGen's community resource for further exploration.
